The cause of death was not immediately clear, though the star was in hospital for exhaustion when he died.
The singer, who transcended genres over his 50-year career in the music industry, was surrounded by his wife, son and other close family members when he passed away.
Jarreau was hospitalized earlier in the week and was said to have been improving slowly.
The Milwaukee-born star won seven Grammy Awards throughout his career.
His biggest single was 1981’s “We’re in This Love Together” from the album Breakin’ Away.
Jarreau also performed vocals on the 1985 song “We Are the World”, and sang the theme to TV’s Moonlighting.
He is one of a handful of musicians to have won Grammy Awards in three separate categories — jazz, pop and R&B.
Time Magazine once described the star as the “greatest jazz singer alive”.
A statement on the star’s website read: “His second priority in life was music. There was no third.
“His first priority, far ahead of the other, was healing or comforting anyone in need.”
Jarreau leaves his wife Susan and son Ryan behind.
