#Mercedes-Maybach to handpick customers for their new S650 cabriolet! [details]

According to a report from Automotive News, it will take more than a thick checkbook to nab a new Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet. Just 75 of the 300 total units are coming to the States and it looks like Mercedes is giving 75 of its best customers the right of first refusal before opening the order books.

Much like Ferrari's selection process for the F50, Enzo, and LaFerrari, Mercedes will first tap on the shoulders of owners who have consistently purchased the latest and greatest offered by the German automaker. Usually, aside some special Black Series offerings from the AMG division, most Mercedes models enjoy unlimited production runs, with each of the 379 nationwide dealers able to claim allotments of even the most expensive variants. This time, dealers will likely only handle the paperwork and delivery of Mercedes' limited drop-top.

This info comes straight from Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Exler, who is apparently already pleased with the response garnered by the S650. "We'll be running out," Exler told AN. "We're pretty happy with the way it's going."

AN says response to the hyper-luxury cruiser was so strong, with orders being filled at the debut party when the car broke cover a day ahead of the 2016 Los Angeles auto show.

Based on the S600 sedan, the S650 adopts similar traits to its seductive counterpart that includes a coupe-like soft top and a dynamic silhouette, sleek design. The limited-production convertible — limited to 300 models worldwide, with 75 bound to the U.S. — is powered by a powerful 6.0L V-12 bi-turbo engine and offers an output well over 600-horsepower transferred to the rear axle courtesy of Mercedes' seven-speed automatic transmission system.

The $323,000 V12 soft-top is the first of its kind from the ultra-high-end Mercedes-Maybach line, meant to tap the recent success of other expensive drop-tops such as the $335,000 Rolls-Royce Dawn and the $267,000 Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible. It comes with a 621-horsepower V12 engine—and Swarovski crystals embedded in the headlights! Talk about OPULENCE!?

I WANT ONE!  Can we get a test drive over here at THE GAMUTT!
